Surf Life Saving Queensland’s (SLSQ) operational training arm, the Australian Lifesaving Academy Queensland (ALAQ), has received $143,000 in funding from the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations. This funding was a part of the Investing in Community Education and Training element of the Teaching and Learning Capital Fund for Vocational Education and Training Program.
The aim of the project funded by the Government is to increase access to nationally recognised basic and advanced emergency care training in regional areas across Queensland. The regional training facilities will allow participants to upskill themselves in health care skills and knowledge that could lead to continued, or new, employment in Australian Health Care or Public Safety employment areas.
SLSQ has over 100 years of experience in delivering emergency care and aquatic rescue training and the funding has allowed the ALAQ to purchase training equipment to increase our reach throughout Queensland.
The funding has been used by SLSQ to purchase basic and advanced emergency care training equipment including:
1. Close to 200 new Little Anne Resuscitation Manikins including adult, child and infant size manikins
2. Approximately 30 manikins that allow defibrillation training to be conducted in as close as possible ‘real life’ scenarios
3. 3 full body First Aid Training Manikins
4. 14 Advanced Resusci Anne Manikins that can work in combination with defibrillation trainers to provide ‘real life’ experience in managing a patient within our courses.
5. Spinal management equipment including spinal boards, stiffneck collars and spinal strapping equipment
6. Suction Equipment – including manual and powered suction devices essential for training people how to clear compromised airways during resuscitation
The funding and purchase of equipment has been integral in allowing us to expand our training to a wider Queensland population with outcomes seen to date including:
1. Delivery of Free CPR Awareness sessions to up to 1,000 Brisbane City Council pool owners as part of a Brisbane City Council Initiative
2. Delivery of emergency care courses in regional areas including Cairns, Townsville, Gladstone, and Sunshine Coast.
3. Upskilling of Queenslanders in Defibrillation and Advanced Resuscitation Training for a number of workplaces resulting in safer work practices and emergency care provision to employees.
4. Employment of additional casual trainers to assist in the delivery of our increased course numbers.
SLSQ and ALAQ will continue to expand our training operations in the community into the future with more courses being available at more training locations. |
